Space Day

I've been reading quite a bit on all things space-related. Here are some interesting tidbits:

Re: Voyager 1 (VGER!)

  • is about to cross the heliosphere and into interstellar space.
  • travels at about 1 million miles per day (!)
  • is nuclear powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (who needs batteries?)

Re: Planets
  • We are about to go from 9 to 12 celestial bodies.
  • "Planets" will be the classical definition.
  • "Plutons" is the new definition, which will include Pluto (duh) as well as Ceres, Charon and UB313.
  • Ceres was formerly known as an asteroid
  • Charon is the pluton-formerly-known-as-the-moon-of-Pluto (beat that, Prince!)
  • UB313 is the latest reincarnation of the 80s band UB40 - they moved from the UK to Detroit.
